 BuildMap Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 28, 2026

BuildMap ("the app") is developed by Paul Scott ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the Android version of BuildMap uses, and how. The short version: we don't collect, store or sell any personal information. BuildMap has no user accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no server of its own.

Information the app uses

Your location. With your permission, BuildMap uses your device's location to show your position on the map and to centre the map on you. Your location is used only on your device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings, and the app will still work.

Your favourites, watches, alerts and recent searches. These are saved only on your device. A watch can include a map area you chose, such as a point and a radius. This information is never sent to us.

Notifications. If you create a watch and allow notifications, the app checks for new building activity in the background every few hours and alerts you on your device. Notifications are generated on your device; we don't run a notification server.

Subscriptions. BuildMap Pro subscriptions are bought and managed through Google Play. Google handles your payment details, and we never see or receive them. The app only receives confirmation from Google Play that a subscription is active. Google's handling of your information is described in the Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy

Third-party services the app contacts

To show the map and building activity, the app connects directly from your device to these services:

- Municipal open-data services of the cities BuildMap covers, such as the City of Toronto, Ville de Montréal, Données Québec, City of Ottawa and other Ontario municipalities, many of them hosted on Esri ArcGIS. They provide public records of building permits, development applications, planning and demolitions.

- Map providers: OpenFreeMap (map tiles and fonts) and Esri (satellite imagery).

- Google Play (subscriptions).

Like any internet request, these services receive your device's IP address and basic technical information, such as the type of request. Map providers also receive the map tiles you request, which shows the general area you're viewing. Your location, favourites and watches are not sent to them. Each service is governed by its own privacy policy.

The building activity shown in BuildMap is public information published by each municipality under its open-data licence. It may include property addresses and, where the city publishes them, applicant or business names.

Sharing

If you use the app's share feature, the image or text you choose is sent to the app you pick, such as messages or email. Nothing is shared without you choosing to share it.

Backups

If Android backup is turned on for your device, Android may include BuildMap's saved data (favourites, watches and settings) in your device backup to your Google account. Google manages that backup, and we can't access it. You can turn backup off in your device settings.

Data retention and deletion

All of BuildMap's data stays on your device. To delete it, clear the app's storage in Android Settings or uninstall the app. Because we don't hold any of your data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.

Children

BuildMap isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the effective date above.
