CanData Privacy Policy

Effective date: November 5, 2026

This policy explains what information the CanData app ("the app") uses, where it goes, and what stays on your device. It applies to CanData for iPhone and iPad and CanData for Android.

SUMMARY

- CanData has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking.
- The developer does not run any servers for the app and does not collect, receive, sell or share your personal information.
- Your saved locations, recent searches and settings stay on your device.
- To show census data, the app sends the map location you choose to Statistics Canada and to your device's built-in address lookup service (Apple or Google).

1. YOUR LOCATION

CanData asks for permission to use your location only when you tap the "my location" button. It never asks when the app starts.

When you tap the button, the app gets your current location once and uses it to:
- centre the map on where you are, and
- check whether you are in Canada. If you are outside Canada, the map shows all of Canada instead.

To check which country you are in, your location is sent to your device's built-in address lookup service: Apple on iPhone and iPad, Google on Android. The app does not store your location and does not send it to the developer. CanData does not use your location in the background.

You can turn location access off at any time in your device's Settings. The rest of the app works without it.

2. MAP TAPS AND SEARCHES

When you tap the map or search for a postal code or neighbourhood, the app needs to know which census area that place is in. To find out, it sends the coordinates of that place (not your own location), or the postal code you typed, to:

- your device's address lookup service (Apple on iPhone and iPad, Google on Android), to find the postal code, area name and country, and
- Statistics Canada (geo.statcan.gc.ca and api.statcan.gc.ca), to get the area's boundary and census data.

Like any internet service, these services receive your device's IP address and standard technical information with each request. Their own privacy policies apply:
- Apple: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
- Google: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Statistics Canada: https://www.statcan.gc.ca (see "Privacy" at the bottom of any page)

Much of the census data is built into the app, so many lookups need no network request beyond the address lookup.

3. MAP IMAGES

The map images are downloaded from map providers as you move around the map. These providers receive your IP address and the area of the map being shown.

- iPhone and iPad: Apple Maps.
- Android: OpenFreeMap (https://openfreemap.org) for the standard map, using OpenStreetMap data, and Esri (https://www.esri.com) for the satellite and hybrid maps.

4. INFORMATION STORED ON YOUR DEVICE

The app stores the following on your device only:
- saved locations
- recent searches
- your neighbourhood filter settings
- your choice of map style and area level
- where the map was last shown, so it reopens there
- the number of free lookups used, and whether you have unlocked full access

None of this is sent to the developer. Your device may include it in its own backups: iCloud or computer backups on iPhone and iPad, and Google's Android backup on Android, depending on your backup settings.

You can delete saved locations and recent searches in the app. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the device.

5. PURCHASES

Full access is bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play. They process the payment, and the developer never receives your payment details. The app receives only a confirmation from the store that full access has been bought, so it can unlock the app and restore your purchase.

Apple's and Google's privacy policies apply to purchases.

6. RATINGS

After you have used the app a few times, it may ask you to rate it using Apple's or Google's built-in rating prompt. Whether the prompt appears, and what you submit, is handled by Apple or Google.

7. SHARING

If you use the share button, the app creates a text summary or image of the census data and passes it to your device's share sheet. Nothing is shared unless you choose where to send it.

8. CHILDREN

CanData is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them. The app does not collect personal information from anyone.

9. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this page with a new effective date.
